Scumbags (alleged) Prey on Good Samaritans

This story got my goat. Apparently some individuals have been cashing in on people’s good will to send funds to victims of the Katrina hurricane.

Reported a few months ago, these cases are now proceeding through the US judicial system.

One alleged con man set up a bogus Red Cross web site to collect banking details, on the pretence that money will be sent to victims of the N’Orleans disaster. Not with out precedence as the same story recounts how the VBSun worm was propagated via emails pleading for people to help with the recent tsunami disaster in Asia.

Violations of user security are bad enough when Big Co. looses money, but when it hits charities it really gets sour. Maybe we should have an offence of “Aggravated Deception” when con men (alleged) go after people’s charitable nature. Story here.
