Aviva, which ranks amongst the biggest insurance group worldwide and UK's biggest insurer, has agreed to a six-year deal with Cable and Wireless for £300m.

Cable and Wireless will provide support and scores of services to Aviva's 35,000 staff based in UK and in India and will include voice telephony, data services, WAN and LAN access (IP-VPN and Multi-Protocol Label Switching) over more than 1000 sites with more than 130,000 individual data and phone points.

The deal is an extension of an ongoing 12-year partnership between the two companies over three continents and will be marked by the introduction of two new services; managed Blackberry platform and speech recognition.

In related news, new Comscore research showed that an increasing number of web users are using the net to buy their car insurance policies, often through so-called price comparison websites, which compare the market in a few seconds.

Aviva, which was formed by the merger of Norwich Union, Commercial Union and General Accident, has already embarked in a cost cutting programme that aims at reducing its IT costs by £33 million by the end of 2008, with significant savings coming from the move to IP telephony.
