LaCie Releases Handheld 1TB External Hard Drive

LaCie Little Big Disk Quadra may be small - the size of a small brick - but it packs 1TB worth of storage and features some rather advanced specs like RAID-0, Firewire/eSATA/USB 2.0 connectivity and a heat-dissipating aluminium enclosure.

This £440 storage device comes with a three year warranty and backup software provided by EMC Retrospect and is the biggest member of a family that includes 500GB and 400GB models as well.

In eSATA, the Quadra can reach up 300MBps transfer rate in theory and the whole thing weighs 0.65Kg.

LaCie reached the Terabyte barrier by combining two 500GB hard disk drives in RAID-0 mode with 8MB cache each, which can morph into a more robust 500GB storage capacity in RAID-1

Although it needs power in eSATA and USB mode, Firewire users can bypass the AC power adapter kit completely.

The gear is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (including Time Machine), Windows XP and Windows Vista.
