16.5 million UK Households Have Internet Access Says ONS

Nearly two thirds of UK's 25 million households have access to the Internet according to latest figures published by Office for National Statistics (ONS) today.

That's a four percent increase over 2007 with an extra 1.2 million added since then; the North-South technology gap is still present with Southerners most likely to be internet-enabled.

Men are more likely to go online than women but overall, more than two thirds of the adult population surf the web on a daily basis - that percentage rises to 77 percent for those aged between 16 and 24.

The over 65-year age group is also fast adopting the web with the number of those who used the web on a daily basis reaching a whopping 54 percent for the first time ever.

The Internet Access 2008 report also points out to the fact that the number of household still using dial-up internet connections still accounts for a sizable 9 percent of UK Households

Surprisingly the number of households actually reluctant to the internet jumped eightfold to reach more than 2 million, that's a whopping 8.5 percent of all UK households.

The ONS also found out that 93 percent of adults with a university degree or an equivalent qualification had access to the internet and that compares with 56 percent for those who don't have any recognised qualification; showing a marked correlation between education and internet access.
